12 Finalists Named for Global Legal Hackathon

The Global Legal Hackathon is a non-profit organization that organizes law schools, law firms and in-house departments, legal technology companies, governments, and service providers to facilitate innovation in the legal industry – across the globe. It brings together the best thinkers, doers and practitioners in law in support of a unified vision: rapid development of solutions to improve the legal industry, world-wide.

Twelve teams from global locations ranging from Australia to China, from Bucharest to Brazil, and from India to San Francisco, have been named as finalists in the second annual Global Legal Hackathon. The teams have been invited to compete in the hackathon’s final found May 4 in New York City.

The first round took place over the weekend of Feb. 22-24, when over 6,000 individuals formed hundreds of teams in 46 host cities spread across 24 countries

At the conclusion of the weekend, a panel of local legal industry leaders in each city served as judges to select the winners that would represent each city or country in the global semi-final round.

Winners of that round were allowed to continue development of their technology over the next several weeks. They then submitted their projects via video to a global panel of judges drawn from 13 countries.

Projects submitted in this semi-final round covered a variety of use cases, each categorized as “Progressing the Business of Law” or “Facilitating Access of Justice.” Examples of the video pitches of teams selected for the finals in New York City:

On May 4, the 12 finalists will pitch to a panel of international legal industry leaders who will select two global winners from each of the private benefit and public benefit categories. Additionally, in honor of the launch of the GROWL Initiative (Global Rise of Women in LegalTech) at this year’s hackathon, one outstanding, women-led team will receive the inaugural GROWL Award.

The hackathon was founded and is organized by Integra Ledger, a blockchain for the legal industry.
